Phonetic Alphabet
Picture

An id
ea from one of our Young Leaders. It consists of the individual words of the phonetic alphabet, laminated, then the first letter cut off like a jigsaw.

An activity devised by a Young Leader to help Brownies learn the phonetic alphabet.

I started by telling them about my 'other name' Charlie Alpha Tango etc...

Then we stuck 2/3 copies of each poster up around the hall where we meet and Brownies got into pairs with their Brownies buddies so each pair had an older and a younger member. Each pair were then given some paper and told to 'decode' each poster making sure they made a note of the poster number. Each line of the poster represents a word. We told them that as they decoded the message they may recognise the words and that they should try to reorder them once they had translated all 5.

Obviously Brownies completed this at varying speeds and the more able ones who finished first I set further challenges. Several Brownies encoded the Brownie motto and for others I wrote simple messages in phonetics for them to practice on.

After that they all had a go at writing their full name and local town in phonetics using the posters still up for help (although some letters such as K do not appear so for this we had alphabet lists ready). This satisfies one of the clauses of the Brownie Communicator badge.
